Special Rapporteurs and other UN Human Rights Council-appointed rights experts, work on a voluntary and unpaid basis, are not UN staff, and work independently from any government or organisation.QUEZON CITY, (PIA) -The Philippine National Police through the Directorate for Police Community Relations officially launched the PCR Compendium Policies Monday during the Flag Raising Ceremony held at Camp Crame, Quezon City. “Member States have not adequately targeted key sources of foreign currency that the junta relies on to purchase arms, including most significantly Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise,” Mr. The report also focuses on the main sources of foreign currency that have enabled the Myanmar junta to purchase over $1 billion in arms since the coup. “By expanding and retooling sanctions and eliminating loopholes, governments can disrupt junta-linked weapons dealers,” Mr. The expert said the ad hoc, uncoordinated nature of current sanctions were allowing payments to be made in other currencies and jurisdictions. That’s because sanctions are not being adequately enforced and because arms dealers linked to the junta have been able to create shell companies to avoid them.” “The Myanmar military and its arms dealers have figured out how to game the system. The report examines why international sanctions on arms dealing networks have failed to stop or slow the flow of weapons to the Myanmar military. The report also documents $28 million in arms transfers from Thai-based entities to the Myanmar military since the coup. India-based entities have supplied $51 million worth of arms and related materials to the military since February 2021. “I implore leaders of Singapore to seize the information within this report and enforce its policies to the maximum extent possible,” the Special Rapporteur said. Andrews recalled that the Government of Singapore has stated that its policy is to, “prohibit the transfer of arms to Myanmar” and that it has decided “not to authorise the transfer of dual-use items which have been assessed to have potential military application to Myanmar.” Singaporean banks have been used extensively by arms dealers. The report reveals that $254 million of supplies have been shipped from dozens of entities in Singapore to the Myanmar military from February 2021 to December 2022. “However, arms dealers operating out of Singapore are critical to the continued operation of the Myanmar military’s deadly weapons factories (commonly referred to as KaPaSa).” “Russia and China continue to be the main suppliers of advanced weapons systems to the Myanmar military, accounting for over $400 million and $260 million respectively since the coup, with much of the trade originating from state-owned entities”, Mr. The Billion Dollar Death Trade: The International Arms Networks That Enable Human Rights Violations in Myanmar. The UN Human Rights Council-appointed expert’s paper, The Billion Dollar Death Trade: International Arms Networks that Enable Human Rights Violations in Myanmaris the most detailed study on post-coup arms transfers to the military to date, said OHCHR.Īccompanied by a detailed infographic, it identifies the major networks and companies involved in these transactions, known values of the transfers, and jurisdictions in which the networks operate, namely Russia, China, Singapore, Thailand, and India. Andrews pleaded for governments to enforce existing bans while coordinating sanctions on arms dealers and foreign currency sources. While calling for a complete ban on the sale or transfer of weapons to the Myanmar military, Mr. Member States now need to step up and stop the flow of these arms,” the expert said. “The good news is that we now know who is supplying these arms and the jurisdictions in which they operate. “Those providing these weapons are able to avoid sanctions by using front companies and creating new ones while counting on lax enforcement. “ Despite overwhelming evidence of the Myanmar military’s atrocity crimes against the people of Myanmar, the generals continue to have access to advanced weapons systems, spare parts for fighter jets, raw materials and manufacturing equipment for domestic weapons production,” said UN Special Rapporteur, Tom Andrews. The Pulsify patch is simple enough in principle: the basis is an array of ultrasound transducers, each consisting of essentially a speaker and a microphone, contained in a patch roughly the size of a postcard. This disruptive technology will be filling an unmet need in ICUs and hospitals across the world.” “The product we are developing will allow doctors in ICUs to quickly attach a patch to the patient’s chest and continuously monitor their cardiac output. Iwan Van Vijfeijken, CEO of the start-up, explained: This is where the Pulsify Medical patch can make a lifesaving difference. There is clearly a need for a better heart monitoring option. This method therefore is not practical in an emergency setting like the ICU. It involves using a probe, the same way as when examining a fetus during pregnancy, meaning that a well trained professional needs to be present at all times, to position the probe and interpret the results. Traditional ultrasound is a far less invasive alternative but doesn’t allow for continuous monitoring. The product we are developing… will be filling an unmet need in ICUs and hospitals across the world. For continuous monitoring, doctors can either insert a catheter intravenously, a risky and time-consuming procedure, or they can insert a probe via the esophagus, which is less invasive but highly uncomfortable for the patient. This is a measure of the volume of blood being pumped by the heart, usually denoted in liters per minute (L/min).ĭespite the importance of the measurement, current methods for obtaining the cardiac output come with serious drawbacks. Obtaining a fast, accurate readout of physiological parameters can make the difference between life and death in emergency situations.Īlong with basic heart rate and blood pressure, another important indicator of the heart’s performance is its cardiac output. One of the first things the medical staff will do is check the patient’s vital signs, such as their pulse, breathing and blood pressure. When a patient is rushed into the intensive care unit (ICU) of a hospital, every second counts. The investment, led by imec.xpand and KU Leuven, will be used to develop a wearable ultrasound patch to non-invasively monitor organs like the heart. Pulsify Medical, a joint imec and KU Leuven spin-off, has closed a seed funding round of €2.6 million. We’ll go into greater detail on the questions themselves later in this article, but in general be prepared for a few background questions, followed by statistical questions and coding. If you’re not sure what to expect, check in with your recruiter. In very rare cases, you may undergo two technical screens before the onsite round. This will take place over Google Hangouts. 1.1.3 Technical screenĪfter the application and pre-screen questionnaire, you’ll move on to a video call with a hiring manager, recruiter, or one of Google’s data scientists. Be sure to specify with your recruiter ahead of time what type of call you’ll be receiving so that you can come prepared. In this case, the technical screen will include a few background questions that would otherwise have been asked in the recruiter call. However, some candidates report passing directly to the technical screen after the initial application. As this is followed by a technical screen, candidates are rarely asked coding or statistical questions at this step. Come ready to answer questions about your professional background and why you’re interested in Google. This call is an opportunity to learn more about the interview process ahead of you as well as how to prepare. 1.1.2 Recruiter phone screenĪfter this, many but not all applicants talk to an HR recruiter on the phone. Applicants with referrals or who have been contacted directly by recruiters via LinkedIn may be able to skip the pre-screen online assessment. If you are prepared for the full technical screen, this preliminary questionnaire will not be difficult. If you’re looking for expert feedback on your resume, you can get input from our team of ex-Google recruiters, who will cover what achievements to focus on (or ignore), how to fine tune your bullet points, and more.Īfter applying, you will receive an email containing a pre-screen questionnaire of introductory technical questions before moving on to the full technical screen. This is the most competitive step in the process, as millions of candidates do not make it past this stage. Note that the Google data scientist role used to be titled “quantitative analyst,” and some job postings may still retain that term.įirst, recruiters will look at your resume and assess if your experience matches the open position. SPECIFICATIONS(stolen directly from the Canon Website) :įully automatic, compact waterproof 35mm AF lens/shutter camera with built-in flash. If you’re still not convinced about this camera, below is a video (not my video) of Fred Herzog, a pioneer of colour street photography shooting on the Canon Sure Shot WP-1 (the non-waterproof cousin of the A1) on the streets of Vancouver. It did however hold up during a heavy downpour, no problem. I would like to run a couple more rolls through it before I take that risk. I also haven’t completely submerged the camera yet. If you’re willing to trade aesthetics for functionality and ease of use this might be the right camera for you… and hey, you might even like the look of it! The Canon Sure Shot A1 still has some features I have yet to try, like a panorama mode and an underwater macro mode. For me, it suits my point and shoot needs. It even floats if you drop it in the water!Īll and all this camera is pretty amazing. I mean a fully waterproof body is pretty amazing. It’s a bit bigger than your average point and shoot, but the trade off is it’s an ultra rugged camera. It’s also kind of tough to tell what frame you are on with the frame counter on this camera. The only real issues I had with this camera is the viewfinder frame lines are kind of hard to see in certain light. It’s also fully waterproof up to 5 meters! This might just be my favourite 35mm camera in my arsenal. It has a relatively fast lens (32mm f3.5) as well as a large and bright view finder. I kind of enjoy the fact that it looks a bit like a toy which makes it far less intrusive when shooting street photos. The only thing that you have to worry about is getting your shot and finding a place to get the filmed developed! The Sure Shot A1 uses 35mm film and automatically adjusts to film from ISO 25 all the way to 3200. Even once you’ve shot all the exposures the camera automatically rewinds the film back into the canister. Just about everything on this camera is fully automated. Open it up, throw in the film, close the door and you’re ready to shoot. I’m pretty sure that a young child who had no experience with film could figure this thing out. I’ve got to say, I’m pretty pleased with these results. Talk them through the terms in person and address any concerns they have up frontĪsking for money is never nice. Here are some tips on developing good relationships that encourage customers to pay on time: It’s much easier to ignore an anonymous reminder than a personal phone call from a friendly member of your team. You can automate a large part of your system, but a human touch can stop you running into problems later on. Strong customer relationships are fundamental to being paid on time. It could include invoice templates and calendar reminders to chase late payments. You can also set reminders for overdue payments and thank you emails for payments received.Įven if you don’t use billing software, setting up your own system will keep you on top of your accounts. This allows you to create invoice templates and automate regular invoices, so you don’t need to create them manually each time. That way, you can save on admin time and receive payments sooner. But as you grow, it’s best to develop a proper system. Develop a clear invoicing systemĪn ad-hoc invoice system might work when your business is small. It can be a good idea to explain your reasons for making changes, in case your customers have any objections.ĭoes your business send out regular company emails to clients? If so, this is another opportunity to explain your payment terms. If your payment terms have changed, make this explicit in your covering email. If you’re creating your own invoice from scratch, then make sure they’re visible and readable. Many invoice templates provide space for your terms. They need to be obvious, but not clutter the layout of the invoice. It’s good practice to include your payment terms on your invoice. Otherwise, customers could plead ignorance when it comes to payment time. If you’re introducing new payment terms or adjusting existing ones, make this very clear. Once you’re happy with your terms, it’s important to communicate them well with your customers. These shorter payment terms can also lead to quicker payments. Many invoices now request payment within two weeks. Traditional payment dates are 30 days after invoicing, but many businesses are revising this. When setting your payment terms, think about what works best for your business. Make it clear what currency you expect to be paid in. This is particularly important if you have overseas customers. This may be on a sliding scale, according to how late the payment is. What happens if a customer doesn’t pay on time? Think through how much you will charge and when. Include any information customers will need to pay you, such as your bank account details. What forms of payment you accept? This might include bank transfer, credit card or PayPal. If you pay your invoices within 30 days but your customers have 60 days to pay you, it could affect your cash flow. This is one of the most important aspects of your payment terms. When laying out your payment terms, consider the following things: This in turn affects your company cash flow. If you don’t state your payment terms or haven’t thought them through, you risk waiting longer for invoices to be settled. Payment terms are important because they allow you to state what you expect from your customers when it comes to getting paid. We also explain what to do when payments are still left unpaid. In this guide, we outline how you can get customers to pay on time. Additionally, you need to know how to chase outstanding invoices without offending customers. It involves developing a good invoicing system and setting out payment terms. Unfortunately, prompt payment of invoices doesn’t happen by default. And you’ll be in a stronger financial position to reinvest money where it's most needed.ĭoes your vision of customer payments involve knocking up a quick invoice, emailing it to them and waiting for the cash to arrive? If so, you could be in for a shock. When your business is paid on time, your operations will be more effective. Do a quick scan to see what others have said or written about your topic. When choosing your speech topic, brainstorm to generate many ideas, and distill those ideas to find your singular topic. In addition to the 1 minute speech topics there are three example speech outlines that have been worked into speeches: one from each group of 50 topics. Once your time is up, go back and highlight or circle relevant points or topics that stick out for you. Whatever you do, don’t stop writing.Īnother way of freewriting is to record yourself talking for a set period of time and then transcribe your key points to go back to and clarify later. OctoGini Beqiri - 8 min read To write a captivating and persuasive speech you must first decide on a topic that will engage, inform and also persuade the audience. You might find it easier to type your freewriting instead of writing it by hand, so you can keep up with your thoughts faster. Simply put, the Rule of Three is a very general principle that states that ideas presented in threes are inherently more interesting, more enjoyable, and more. Set a timer and begin writing whatever thoughts or ideas come to mind about your particular subject. This is probably the simplest brainstorming method of all. Most student graduation speeches are in manuscript format. As your cluster begins to grow, you might want to connect smaller spokes to one another and create new links between subjects. From each spoke, begin to jot down other associated ideas and thoughts. Now, begin to write other associated ideas, topics, or subcategories related to that main topic around the hub, and connect them as separate spokes. Start with your main idea and draw a circle around it, thinking of it as the hub of a wheel. ClusteringĪlso known as mind-mapping, clustering gives your word association a visual form. What words, topics, or other subjects do you associate with that first topic? Now what words, topics, or other subjects do you associate with the following word? Continue this chain of word association to give you a broad spectrum of ideas. You can brainstorm using a number of different exercises. You can brainstorm by yourself, or you might want to bring in a few friends, colleagues, or classmates to help you come up with ideas in a group setting. One of the best ways to help solidify your speech topic is to brainstorm. Clustering: An example of an idea cluster for the subject “gardening.” Brainstorming In either instance, it’s helpful to approach your topic through brainstorming.
